One week in Istria: a relaxed itinerary from a villa near Poreč
By the Enjoy Istria team Published 2 min read
In short
With a week near Poreč, alternate busy days and lazy ones: Poreč old town and the beach, Rovinj, the hill towns of Motovun and Grožnjan, a pool day, Pula and the Brijuni islands, the Lim bay and Vrsar, and a final day at home. Every stop is within about an hour's drive.

Istria is small enough to explore from one base. From our villas near Poreč, the sea, the hill towns and the Roman sites are all within an hour. This is the week we would plan for friends: a mix of outings and slow days, so you go home rested.
Day 1: Settle in (Saturday)
Arrive in the afternoon (check-in from 15:00), do a big food shop on the way, and spend the evening by the pool. In summer, stays run Saturday to Saturday; see why in our changeover guide. Shops in Croatia open on only some Sundays, so read our self-catering shopping guide before you arrive.
Day 2: Poreč and the beach
Walk the old town in the morning before it gets hot: the Decumanus, Marafor square and the Euphrasian Basilica. Spend the afternoon at one of the beaches near Poreč, and come back to town for dinner by the harbour.
Day 3: Rovinj
Drive south (about 40 minutes) to Rovinj, Istria’s most photographed town. Climb to the church of St Euphemia, walk the lanes, swim at the Golden Cape park. Our Rovinj day trip guide has the details.
Day 4: Pool day
Do nothing. Sleep late, swim, grill dinner in the summer kitchen. Days off are what a villa is for.
Day 5: The hill towns
Head inland to Motovun and Grožnjan, with lunch in a konoba and a stop at Baredine Cave on the way if you have children. Follow our hilltop towns route.
Day 6: Pula and Brijuni
Go south to Pula (about 45 minutes) for the Roman Arena, then take the boat from Fažana to the Brijuni National Park in the afternoon. Book Brijuni tickets ahead in summer. See our guides to Pula and Brijuni.
Day 7: Lim bay, Vrsar and a last swim
Take a boat trip into the Lim bay, a long sea inlet just south of Vrsar, or drive to the viewpoint above it. Eat oysters or mussels, and finish with a last swim. Read our Lim bay guide.
Day 8: Departure (Saturday)
Check-out is by 10:00. Leave early: Saturday roads are busiest in summer.
Alternatives
- With small children: replace Day 6 with an aquapark and keep Brijuni for older kids.
- Food lovers: swap Rovinj for a wine and olive oil day; see Istrian wine and olive oil.
- Outside summer: stays can start any day with a 6-night minimum, so shift the plan to suit.
- Day out of Croatia: Piran in Slovenia is about an hour away.
Choosing your base
All three of our villas work for this plan. Villa Duga is closest to the beaches and Poreč. Villa Bina and Villa Cvita Domenica in Labinci are quieter and a little closer to the hill towns. Not sure? Read which villa suits your group.
Opening times, timetables and prices change from year to year, so check them with the venue before you go.
Questions and answers
Is one week enough for Istria?
Yes. Istria is compact, and from a base near Poreč the main sights are within an hour's drive. A week lets you see the highlights and still have lazy days by the pool.
What is the best base for exploring Istria?
The Poreč area on the west coast is central: Rovinj is about 40 minutes south, the hill towns 30 to 50 minutes inland, Pula about 45 minutes and the Slovenian coast about an hour.
Should I stay in one place or move around in Istria?
Stay in one place. Distances are short, and unpacking once makes a week feel far longer and more relaxed.
