Poreč has a Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers with long sunny days, and mild, wetter winters. Autumn brings most of the rain; the bura and jugo winds shape the weather at any time of year.

Poreč sits on the west coast of Istria, facing the open Adriatic. The climate is Mediterranean, softened by the sea in winter and cooled by breezes in summer. Here is what to expect in the air and in the water, month by month.

The seasons

Summer (June to August)

Hot and sunny, with long evenings. July and August are the hottest months, and the sea is at its warmest. Short thunderstorms can roll in on hot afternoons, usually clearing quickly. Inland, in villages such as Labinci, nights are often a little cooler than on the coast.

Autumn (September to November)

September is still summer for swimming, with warm sea and fewer people. October brings golden light, cooler evenings and the first heavy rain. November is the wettest month, quiet and green, with truffles and new olive oil.

Winter (December to February)

Mild compared with central Europe, but cool and sometimes windy. Sunny days are common between rainy spells. Snow on the coast is rare.

Spring (March to May)

Spring arrives early: wild asparagus in March, blossom in April, warm days in May. The sea warms slowly and is still cool for most swimmers until late May or June. See our guide to Istria in spring.

The winds to know

  • Bura (bora): a cold, gusty wind from the north-east. It clears the sky and leaves the sea along the west coast calm and very clear.
  • Jugo (scirocco): a warm, humid wind from the south-east that brings clouds, rain and waves.
  • Maestral: the gentle north-westerly sea breeze of summer afternoons, welcome on hot days and popular with sailors.

What to pack

  • Summer: light clothing, a hat, high-factor sun cream, water shoes and a light layer for evenings.
  • Spring and autumn: layers, a waterproof jacket and comfortable walking shoes.
  • Winter: a warm coat and waterproofs. Villa Duga and Villa Bina have fireplaces for cool evenings.

Choosing when to come

For a beach holiday, come between mid-June and mid-September. For walking, cycling, food and lower prices, aim for May, early June or September. Our best time to visit guide has a month-by-month breakdown, and our September guide explains why it is our favourite month.
