Cycling around Poreč: routes, bikes and tips

By the Enjoy Istria team Published 2 min read

In short

The Poreč area is good cycling country: an easy coastal path for families, a network of marked routes on quiet lanes through vineyards and olive groves, the gentle Parenzana railway trail inland, and hilly road loops for stronger riders. Spring and autumn are best; in summer, ride early.

Istria has invested a lot in cycling over the last couple of decades, and Poreč is a good base. Within a few kilometres of town you can choose between a flat seaside ride with an ice cream stop, a loop through vineyards to a wine village, or a serious climb into the hills.

Easy rides along the coast

The coast around Poreč is low and fairly flat. Promenades and cycle paths link the old town with the resorts to the north and south, and you can ride for an hour with the sea beside you most of the way. Heading south, the coast continues towards Funtana and Vrsar.

These rides suit families and anyone who wants a gentle start to the day. Watch for pedestrians on shared paths in summer.

Into the countryside

Turn inland and within ten minutes you are on quiet lanes between vineyards, olive groves and red-earth fields. The Poreč area has a network of marked cycling routes, with signs and route numbers, linking small villages such as Labinci, Kaštelir and Tar. Ask a local bike shop or the tourist office for the current route maps, or use a cycling app with Istrian routes loaded.

Good destinations include:

  • Baredine Cave, between Nova Vas and Labinci, for a cool underground break. See our Baredine guide.
  • Family wineries and olive oil producers, many of which welcome visitors for tastings. Read about Istrian wine.
  • Novigrad, on the coast to the north. See our Novigrad day trip.

The Parenzana

For a longer day, drive inland and ride the Parenzana, the old railway trail between Trieste and Poreč. Its gentle gradients, tunnels and viaducts make it the classic Istrian cycle route. Read our full Parenzana guide.

Road cycling and longer loops

Road cyclists will find quiet tarmac and plenty of climbing inland, with hilltop towns such as Motovun, Grožnjan and Višnjan as natural targets. Distances are short, but the hills add up. Traffic is light outside July and August, though the main roads to the coast can be busy on summer weekends.

Bikes and e-bikes

Several shops in and around Poreč rent bikes, from city bikes to mountain bikes and e-bikes. E-bikes have changed cycling in Istria: they make the inland hills easy, and they mean mixed-ability groups can ride together. Book ahead in high season, and ask whether the shop delivers.

Tips

  • Heat: from June to September, start early and finish before midday. Carry more water than you think you need.
  • Light: bring lights for tunnels on the Parenzana and for the short autumn evenings.
  • Surfaces: many country routes are partly gravel. Wider tyres help.
  • Safety: wear a helmet, and take care on narrow, winding roads with limited visibility.
  • Rest days: the villa pool is the perfect recovery plan.

Where to stay

Villa Duga in Špadići is close to the coastal paths north of Poreč. Villa Bina and Villa Cvita Domenica in Labinci are surrounded by quiet country lanes. Ask us about storing bikes when you book.

Opening times, timetables and prices change from year to year, so check them with the venue before you go.
