A day trip to Venice from Poreč by boat
By the Enjoy Istria team Published 2 min read
In short
In summer, seasonal fast boats link Poreč with Venice, so you can sail across the Adriatic in the morning, spend several hours in the city and return in the evening. It is a long but memorable day. Book early, bring a passport or ID card for everyone, and plan a short, focused route in Venice rather than trying to see everything.

Looking west from Poreč on a clear day, you are looking towards Venice, about 100 km across the sea. For centuries Istria was part of the Venetian Republic, and you can see its influence in every bell tower and lion on a town gate. In summer you can make the trip yourself, by boat, in a day.
How it works
From late spring to early autumn, fast catamarans run between Poreč and Venice. A typical day trip:
- Early morning: board in Poreč harbour.
- Mid-morning: arrive in Venice after a crossing of around three hours.
- Late morning to late afternoon: free time in the city.
- Late afternoon: sail back, arriving in Poreč in the evening.
Several operators sell these trips, directly or through agencies in Poreč. Schedules, prices and the number of weekly departures change every year, so check and book early, especially for July and August.
Documents
Even though Croatia and Italy are both in the Schengen area, documents are checked on international boat routes. Bring a passport or ID card for everyone, including children.
What to see in a few hours
You have about six to seven hours. Choose a route rather than trying to do everything:
- St Mark’s Square, the basilica and the Doge’s Palace. Book timed tickets online in advance to skip queues.
- The Rialto Bridge and the market nearby (mornings).
- A vaporetto ride along the Grand Canal: one of the best ways to see the palaces.
- Getting lost in the quieter districts of Cannaregio or Dorsoduro, away from the crowds.
Venice charges an access fee for day visitors on certain peak days. Check the city’s official website before you go and whether your boat ticket includes it.
Is it worth it?
Yes, if you have not been to Venice, enjoy a boat trip and do not mind a long day.
Think twice if you are travelling with small children who get seasick or tired, or if the sea forecast is rough; crossings can be cancelled in bad weather.
An alternative for a shorter day is Piran in Slovenia, a small Venetian-style town an hour’s drive away.
Tips
- Eat a light breakfast and bring motion sickness tablets if you need them.
- Wear comfortable shoes: Venice is a walking city with many bridges.
- Bring water and snacks; prices near St Mark’s are high.
- Keep an eye on the time: boats will not wait.
Getting to the harbour
Poreč harbour is 3.6 km from Villa Duga and about 11 km from Villa Bina and Villa Cvita Domenica in Labinci. Leave enough time to park in one of the town car parks before boarding.
